Registration
During the past week, the College has been hosting the Registration Panel from the Department of Education here in the ACT. This panel makes recommendations to the ACT Minister regarding the formal registration of schools to function here in Canberra and to offer the curriculum that is approved by the civic authorities.

The College welcomes to process of registration for several reasons. The process ensures that all independent schools provide an academic experience that is accredited by the state authorities. The College enjoys a measure of government funding and, as a consequence, it is reasonable to expect that the policies and practices of Radford are open and accountable. The registration process also offers invaluable insights into the quality of our programs. The commendations and recommendations of the panel form an important part of external validation of College. Although Radford spends considerable time and effort in staying connected with similar schools all over Australia, it is highly beneficial to be reviewed by our own peers here within the ACT.

The registration process consisted of three phases: application (completed by May 2010), inspection and review (completed last week); and the final decision (completed before the end of November 2010). The review stage consisted of a three day visit by a panel of ten people, which was chaired by one of the government school principals, and had members across all sectors of ACT education. They present their findings to the Minister subject to our compliance with ACT Curriculum documents and Department policies.

I am pleased to inform you that, subject to receipt of the completed Grounds Report from our visitors, the Panel intends to recommend that Radford College be registered from 2011 to the end of 2015. They gave a range of commendations including Pastoral Care, Values and Service integration, Co-curricular experiences, positive and effective learning environment from K to 12, a collegial staff tone and sense of mission amongst senior staff, highly effective chaplaincy, leadership opportunities for students, pride in the College and very high levels of personal commitment from staff, well resourced PD program, strong Junior School including excellent commitment to the PYP which is well mapped to Every Chance to Learn, a well-structured and responsive curriculum, and effective communication systems.

There was a small number of recommendations, which we will soon receive in greater detail and provide to staff.

The findings of the Panel will be sent to the Minister in whose power the final decision regarding Registration rests. We will receive the Final Report before the end of October, so there is still a little time to wait.

I want to thank Peggy Mahy and her superb team for their efforts in the past months to bring us to this point. I also thank all staff, students and parents for their assistance. The process has been an affirming one for Radford. I particularly note that the Panel commendations match closely with the six chief objectives for which this College was established and for which we continue to strive.

Visit by Principals from AHISA
During the week, Radford was pleased to host members of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA) for the NSW/ACT branch meeting. We hosted a meeting of Heads from all over NSW and the ACT and, judging by their comments to me, they were very impressed with Radford. Most of our guests had not been to Radford before and they were delighted by what they saw. I want to thank all staff and students for your hospitality. The Year 6 guides were simply superb and were obviously very proud of their school. The grounds looked lovely and the rooms we used were very well presented. I was also glad to welcome Dr Mulford back to his old school. I hope he liked how we are looking after Radford in his absence.

Miss Celia Lindsay
Traffic and parking
Can you please ensure that you do not park in areas which are traffic lanes? I have received a number of reports of drivers blocking traffic in the Junior School car park by stopping in the roadway, rather than parking in a designated parking spot. This then leads to traffic being stopped through the first roundabout, which in turn stops traffic proceeding to other areas of the grounds. As you know, the College is looking at ways to address the traffic problems, but in the interim, please try to consider how your behaviour affects others.
