Staffing News (Secondary School)
I am pleased to inform the community of some changes in positions of responsibility arising from Long Service Leave arrangements that are about to take place.
Mr Peter Dodd, our Director of Studies (High School) will take four weeks leave from the commencement of next week. His role will be taken by Mr Mathew Irving, who presently is our Head of Music.
When he returns to the College next term, Mr Dodd will relieve Ms Lisa Moloney (Head of High School), who will be away from the College in fourth term taking some well-earned long service leave. Mr Dodd will be Acting Head of High School from that time for the remainder of the calendar year. Mr Irving will remain as Acting Director of High School Studies for the same period. Ms Suzanne Van Strien will continue to be our Assistant Head of High School.
Mr Nick Akhurst has kindly agreed to be the Interim Director of Performing Arts, a position which embraces both Drama and Music. The Co-curricular Music program will be managed by Ms Heidi Anthony. This arrangement will commence from next week.
We will soon welcome a new member of the Drama staff to the College. Ms Yvette Siladi will be with us to take classes in Senior Drama and to relieve the pressure that now falls on Mr George Huitker and Mr Akhurst. Ms Siladi will also teach within the English faculty and we offer to her our warm welcome to Canberra in the late winter.
Changes
I regret the disruption that might flow from the abovementioned changes. We have been careful to ensure that the classroom experience of students is kept to a high standard. I am grateful to our Heads of Department for their careful planning and their support in preparations.
One of the features of the marvellous stability of Radford is the number of long serving staff who are now approaching their time for Long Service Leave. The College plans the schedule of leave several years in advance and goes to considerable lengths to ensure that the effect on learning and teaching is minimised. I am glad to have the problem of giving leave to excellent people who have served the College for much of their career!
We are glad to welcome Mr Bob Boyce back to the Science Department after his break this term. We trust that he is well-rested and refreshed.
The Sign
We are pleased with the appearance of the new sign at the main entrance to the College. This idea was proposed by the P&F in 2009 and will allow us to use technology to inform visitors about College events. I am grateful to the P&F for your support and encouragement with this project and we hope that it will be a useful addition to our facilities. The sign will become operational next week, after the supporting computer program has been installed and staff have been trained in its use.
The Radford Fete
The support of the P&F remains quite magnificent and is never taken for granted. The Fete Committee has been working hard for months to prepare for this year’s event. As you are aware, we have committed ourselves to raise sufficient funds to refurbish the Lecture Theatre in the Senior School, which is a very important facility that is used by almost everyone in the College. We want to do a good job with this project so that it will last for many years.
Please follow the links to the Fete e-News. Our Fete Convenors Dr Amelie Barry and Mr Sean Harvey are making a brilliant contribution to this year’s event. The benefits from the Fete flow to all of us and the support you give is so appreciated.
Thanks for being involved
I really appreciate the many parents who now are greeting me on the sidelines and at sporting events. I know that not everyone knows the identity of the man in the hat at Radford games. The Celtic curse means that I burn even in winter and usually appear “incognito”. Thank you to so many for saying hello to me on Saturdays. More importantly, thank you for your support for Radford students and all that we stand for at the College. The educational journey is just as important as the destination – and it is good to share it together as a community.
Peace
