The Radford Institute

This week marks the formation of the Radford Institute, and I have the honour of giving the inaugural address to mark the occasion.  The first event of the Radford Institute will be held on Wednesday 18 August (tonight) in the RAYoung Hall from 5pm to 6.30pm.

The title of my address this evening will be “Two Way Partnerships – a Possible Way Forward for Indigenous Education in Australia”. I will recount my experience of establishing the Gawura Campus for inner city Indigenous students in Sydney. It is a story of failure and success, and of learning how to respect the needs and strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families living in Redfern and the inner city. I look forward to sharing the story. I am delighted that some children from the Gawura Campus will be joining us for the occasion.

Gawura is named from an Eora word that means “whale”. The whale is a sacred totem of many clans from the Gadagal people who first lived in the area which European settlers called Port Jackson and Sydney Town. This name was suggested to me by a number of people from the Redfern area who were advising us on the whole plan. They chose “Gawura” because of the Gadagal clan of the Eora Nation and because many, many years ago “God saved a nation through the belly of a whale”. It was our intention through the provision of a strong education to share in the saving of a nation. Tonight I will tell the story of why such a school was formed, and how it might inform the future of indigenous education in our country. Please come along if you want to hear about it.

The Radford Institute is an initiative to bring together people from throughout the ACT and beyond to consider matters of importance in educational thinking and policy making. The Institute is simply a forum for hearing ideas and discussing the future of education in a non-political manner. The second meeting of the Radford Institute will be held in October 2010 and we will bring in a speaker who can challenge us and make us reflect. From time to time we will hear from members of the Radford community; at other times we will invite people from different sectors to share their ideas.

The future of education in Australia does not belong to political parties or movements. It belongs to all of us. Radford seeks to make a contribution to dreaming about the future of this nation, and our special concern is the education of children and young people. We want to participate in a just, inclusive and compassionate community, where the needs of children are set ahead of political or sectional concerns, and where there is a passion for justice and integrity. The Radford Institute is one attempt to raise such a voice. Under the leadership of Mr Peter Dodd, our Director of Studies (High School), the Radford Institute plans to hold at least three sessions each year where a wide range of topics are explored. These sessions are open to everyone who wants to come along and listen and share thoughts or experiences.

Please feel free to join us. The sessions are strictly limited to 90 minutes, with the first 30 minutes being set aside for conversation over a cup of tea or coffee. The address will commence at 5.30pm.

Peace
