Principal

Welcome back
Welcome back one and all to Radford College, as we commence Term 3 of 2010. The term ahead will be a particularly important time in the life of Radford, as we move closer to the formation of our next Strategic Plan, whilst we also undergo the process of Registration and inspection. At such times, we pause to reflect on the achievements of the College with thankful hearts. Yet we also focus our minds anew on the challenges that lie ahead. We delight in past success but it we must continue to gaze into the future if we are to be ready to contribute to its ultimate shape under God.

Holiday activities
The mid-year winter break brings a welcome punctuation mark to the busy schedule of Radford College life. Over the holidays, however, there still was considerable activity. Students and staff from the College travelled to the Battlefields of World War I in France and Belgium, helped to build a house in a Vietnamese village, reunited with the people of Dare in Timor Leste, and joined with other Round Square schools in Singapore. Students also represented the College in Football (ACT) and in Netball (Qld), and battled difficult conditions in the NSW snowfields with the Radford Snowsports team. We thank all students for their support in these matters and honour the efforts of our excellent staff and parents who made these things happen.

Maintenance

The College continues to improve our facilities in each holiday break. The work on the Junior School Stage Two is now in its final months, though the welcome rains this year have delayed the expected completion date. A painting program that is akin the on-going task of painting the Harbour Bridge continues each holiday period. We have also been refurbishing classrooms on a rolling schedule, this time focussing on Rooms 30-32.

New Staff
We welcome a number of new staff and students this term. In the Junior School we welcome Ms Melissa Alexander to Year 3-6 Music; Ms Kelly Mara (Year 6) and Ms Emily Goodrum (Year 4). In the Secondary School we are pleased to welcome Ms Christie Harvey (Year 7 Humanities/Japanese), Ms Melanie Garner (RAVE and AD&T), Ms Kareena Little (AD&T) and Ms Sue Gascoigne (Visual Arts). We trust that all of these outstanding people will find great fulfilment in their time at Radford.

Strategic Plan

The College Strategic Planning process now moves into its final stage. Preliminary drafting is underway, and in the coming months we will reconvene focus groups of the Radford community to consider the general direction of the draft plan. There is still time for the community to be involved and to have your say. We really appreciate the high level of engagement from our community in the surveys and in the four focus groups.

College Registration and IB PYP

The College welcomes the sense of accountability and reassurance that comes with the ACT Department of Education Registration system. For a week in Term 3, we will host the Registration Panel who will meet staff, students and parents as part of their work. Later in the year, Radford College Junior School will host the International Baccalaureate Authorisation Panel as they consider our application to be considered an IB World School in the provision of the Primary Years Program (PYP) Curriculum. The PYP is fully compliant with the existing ACT Curriculum requirements. The consequence of these initiatives will be to ensure that Radford is well placed both locally and internationally.

Each student should see the coming weeks as an opportunity to refresh their own goals for the remainder of the year. The academic tone of the College is excellent and the learning culture is conducive to intellectual growth and personal integrity. With a sense of anticipation, I welcome everyone back to the College and look forward to further progress.

Best wishes for a happy term,
Peace

MATHEMATICS
Mr Tim Grabovzsky

Year 10 Maths Day
On Thursday June 24, 10 students from Year 10 competed in the inaugural Year 10 Maths Day at Burgmann College. The day was designed for top mathematicians to compete in teams of 5 against other schools from the Canberra region. It is also a prelude to the tough ANU Year 12 Maths Day held annually. There were four rounds of competition during the day where students had to solve lateral thinking type questions. Going into the final round, the Radford 1 team was sitting first and the Radford 2 team, seventh. After the final round the results were Radford 1 second, and Radford 2 equal third. A fantastic result against a total of 16 teams. The students had a great day and enjoyed the mathematical challenges as well as meeting like-minded students from other school around Canberra.

The teams were:

Radford 1 (2nd overall)                   Radford 2 (3rd overall)
Nisha Nangrani                                 Edward Xing
Aaron Nguyen                                   Joanne Lee
Jevan Wong                                       Kim To
Qian Qian Chen                                 Martin Tran
Helen Huang                                      Naomi Kwong

These students should be congratulated on a fantastic day of competition!

Reflection
Rosalia is thirteen.  She lives in a two bedroom shack on an earthen floor with seven others overlooking Dili, Timor.  She rises at five for her chores, leaves at seven for school, walking three kilometers up hill.  She is a beautiful girl and dreams one day of being a doctor (her father died from ‘sickness’ when she was young).

James lives in Brisbane.  He had a holiday recently on a cruise ship.  He loved it.  A daily smorgasbord of food was offered, but he preferred nuggets.  Chicken nuggets.  Every evening: fish, roast, seafood, stir-fry, curry?  No.  Just nuggets.  Nuggets.  Nuggets.  Nuggets.  When they got home, James’ family stopped off at Mac D’s and he had to choose again.  He chose nuggets!  (The name is fictional, but the story is no concoction.)

Rosalia and James share a remarkably bland diet.  Rosalia’s is not nuggets though.  It’s rice.  Rice porridge.  There are two notable differences.  Rosalia has no choice.  She also is not obese. Read a fuller outline of Rosalia’s story here.  It is offered gently, respectfully and not as an opportunity to consume another’s story before move quickly on to another byte.

Saint Paul writes this in Romans 12: (Transl: laughingbird.net)
Sisters and brothers, in light of all the generous breaks God has given you, I urge you to offer in return the only thing you have that comes within cooee being enough: your whole selves, bodies and all . . . Do not model your life on the usual aspirations around you. Instead, allow God to completely remodel your life. This will start with changing the way you think, so that you will be able to tune in to what God wants, which of course is always what is good and worthwhile and for the best.

When Jamie Oliver faces NUGGETS (and pizza) in his food revolution, he is working in a surprisingly priestly role.  (This is the reality food show that has caught our attention!)  Jamie’s vision is very simple.  Could families stop deep-frying their breakfast, eaten disparately around the tele and gather around some simple, more wholesome flavours at a table, breaking bread together?  He is right.  In this lies the art of revolution.  May we find ourselves in the faces of those who love us, gracing our senses with some simple, MSG free stimuli, eating what we need rather than what we can.  Maybe it does catch us off guard that one of the very first places the risen Jesus is encountered is around a table.  So be careful.  Eating together in your home is where God is pleased to dwell.  It only takes two or three.  It is the root of revolution.  It’s path leads to food enough for all.

RAS
$5,500 was spent on a house in Vietnam (from the RAS Charity Fundraiser).  It was built in the holidays by a bunch of senior students.  They worked hard.  The house will stand at least for 80 years.  Less that 60 minutes after it was finished, the family moved in.  Ask the students who travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia, and of all the amazing things they saw and did, building the house is at the top of the list.

Timor Leste  We returned again last holidays for a second cup of tea.  It was an incredibly rich experience.  It is a great privilege to come close to people who share something of their lives.  Timor fight hard for their own independence.  Education is a most prized opportunity among parents and children.  Our partnership is about enhancing their autonomy, principally through education.  We wait now to see what will be taken up with the Home Language unit.  We complete the second chapter of the '42 Footsteps documentary with some supplementary curriculum material.  We distribute the dictionaries to teachers (not to students).  Some of our money is being used to feed the students lunch (otherwise they don’t come to school).  The early readers in Tetum were received with great delight.  It will take a while to tell some of the many stories.
