Time for a little break
This is the last letter to the community for a few weeks. Students, staff and families will welcome the forthcoming mid-year break alike.  The teaching staff will remain at the School for two days of professional development next week, and will then be able to enjoy the refreshment of a well-earned break after a busy semester.

There have been several important developments during Semester I that are worth noting once again.

The Junior School Stage Two BER project has been steadily rising from the space that was once the Junior School Car Park. I am sure that everyone is delighted to see how well it suits the landscape. As I have mentioned before, the welcome rain this year has delayed progress a little, but none of us is objecting. The building will be finished by the end of Term 3, which will allow us Term 4 to complete the landscaping and set the furniture in place in a timely fashion for the following academic year. I am really looking forward to seeing the new playground and gathering place for the Junior School students. By placing the building over the car park, we have protected the play space for future generations of Radford students.

We commenced the year with excellent camps conducted for Year 5, Year 7, Year 11, the House Captains and the Prefects. Each of these has been reviewed for quality, and we plan to make some minor changes in the future. The Prefects have been doing a good job in College life and their contribution to World Environment Day and to the College Foundation Day was inspirational. The College Captains have represented us on numerous occasions, and always speak with clarity and integrity.

We have enjoyed a period of stability on the College staff with very little movement. At this mid year point there are a number of changes to bring to your mind. We continue to be thankful for the outstanding quality of our staff.

Mrs Alaine Cole  - Year 7 Humanities, Japanese to Year 9
left us last week to accompany her partner to the UK for a three-year posting. Thanks for all you’ve done for Radford students and for your support of the Student Christian group.

Mr Joel Copeland - Junior School Music
will take one year’s leave of absence to travel to the UK for further his experience. We will miss him.

Mr James Barnett - Year 6 Teacher
will leave us to take up a leadership post in a government Primary school. He has served us well for over 6 years, and we thank him for his fine work in the classroom and in sports, especially in Rugby.

Dr Pene Brook Assistant Chaplain
will leave us to be with her partner in his church ministry in Victoria. Although she has been here a comparatively short time, Pene Brook has impressed all at Radford with her intelligence, her compassion, her determined mind, her warmth and honesty. She will be missed by all.

Ms Marnie Lehmann - Year 3/4 Coordinator
We wish the wonderful Marnie Lehmann all the very best for her Maternity Leave.

During Semester II, a number of staff will take long service leave:

Mr Bob Boyce (Science)
Mr Peter Dodd (Director of Studies, High School)
Mr Tim Mineham (AD&T)
Mr Rob Riley (Visual Arts)
Ms Lisa Moloney (Head of High School)

away for 5 weeks in Term 3
away for 4 weeks in Term 3
away for all of Semester II
away for all of Semester II
away for Term 4

We have been blessed by the high calibre of replacements for all of these excellent people. I will announce the list of new people in due course. We regret any disruption to classes, naturally, but believe that we have a very strong staff team for the semester ahead.

I want to congratulate all students and staff for the hard work of Semester I. I am very pleased with the tone of the College and look forward to building on this in the coming months. The Strategic Planning process has now entered the drafting phase, and we will convene new focus groups during Term 3 to consider the overall directions proposed in the new Plan.

I have now completed my first year at Radford. As I reflect on the time that has passed, I thank the community for your welcome and support. It has been a time of considerable change in my life, and it was made easier by my meeting so many wonderful people in this superb school. The students here are really marvellous, eschewing humbug and demonstrating genuine care for others and commitment to their studies. Radford has an enviable learning culture already, it will be a joy to strengthen these admirable qualities for a future that is certain to face change and challenge.

Have a wonderful break everyone, and travel safely in God’s care.

Peace

Reflection
Many of the stories from the Bible, especially those from the Hebrew Scriptures, share a literary pattern that moves from the negative to the positive; from the human view to God’s view. The reading for this week from 1 Kings 18:1 to 1 Kings 19:13 follows such a pattern. Elijah, a prophet, miracle worker and irritant to the royal family, is a man of great passion. His love and obedience to God cannot be doubted, but his temper gets the better of him at times and he appears to love a good fight. These days we would be tempted to send him off for anger management classes. Vengeance is an important component of his worldview. Not content with God’s justice or the revelation of God’s power and might, not content to just take on the priests of Baal and totally defeat and humiliate them, in the heat and power of his victory, he has them slaughtered. Violence breeds violence and now it is Elijah who flees for his life. Where does he go? He goes to the desert. It is here, defeated himself, that he can finally hear God’s voice. It is a voice that speaks not from the raging wind or fire, not from violence and destruction, but from the gentle quietness and refreshment of the desert breeze. And still he struggles to understand. Caught up in our business, our own ideas and interpretations, we too often also struggle to understand or hear God speak to us. We want the God of miracles and action and vengeance and ? And God calls to us from the desert through the quiet refreshment of the desert breeze and turns our lives upside down if we will stop and listen. Dr Pene Brook
