Thank you for your support
It is really important for the College to express its thanks to the parent community for your support of the Radford Building Fund. I don’t write about this matter very often, and this is a serious oversight. I want to take a short moment this week to express our thanks to you for your material support, and to let everyone know how the funds are being used.
The Building Fund at Radford has been in operation since the foundation of the College in 1983. The remarkable capital developments that our students enjoy each day have come, in the main, because of the efforts of past families who have contributed to the Building Fund. From time to time, the College receives grants from the Commonwealth Government, and these have been incredibly important. However, government grants did not build Radford. It is through the combined efforts of careful business planning and the selfless support of past families that the resources of the College have been put to such good use.
As an aside, it is fashionable at present to criticize the funds issued under the Building the Education Revolution Economic Stimulus package. Some writers believe that the money has been wasted. Radford College acknowledges the support of the BER funds, and believes that we have put every dollar of the grant to very good use. The Junior School Stage 2 development received $3 million of BER funds to construct four classrooms, common areas, an Art/Science teaching space, amenities, playgrounds and covered parking spaces for up to 38 vehicles. It is going to be a superb facility for Radford students and staff. The College added a further $800,000 to the project, to incorporate all the things we wanted from the new building. This additional amount came from the College Building Fund.
As we move into the future and begin to dream of what might be possible, I am reminded again that each generation has a responsibility to bequeath something magnificent to the future. Just as this present generation of students draws the benefits of the efforts of past parents and supporters, we need to remain far-sighted in all our plans. It is for this reason that the College Building Fund exists, and I am very grateful that over 90% of families contribute to this tax-deductible fund.
At a recent lunch in my office with Year 8 students from a tutor group, we played an imagination game about the kinds of things the College needs to do next. Their ideas usually turn to building and property issues, and this particular group of lunch guests was no different. They mentioned a number of things that they feel the College lacks – improved outdoor seating, better covered areas for rainy or hot days, a larger canteen with improved seating, improvements to the Lecture Theatre, additional technology throughout the College, a second driveway (yes, it comes up quite a lot), a dance rehearsal space, a specialist performance space and theatre. Some students want us to improve the access to lecture rooms, such as the Senior School students enjoy. Others wanted us to have enough funds to help underprivileged people here in Canberra. Fewer others mention a swimming pool, though they are usually silenced by the chorus of others who rightly point out the two excellent pools not far away from Radford.
Each of these thoughts is worth considering. Yet none of them would be possible without the Building Fund. The Building Fund helps the College to ensure that tuition fees support the education program offered in classrooms and co-curricular experiences. The Building Fund exists so that we can fund the maintenance and improvement of the College infrastructure. Now that we are no longer a “beginning” school, we have an obligation to ensure that the facilities we offer match our emerging reputation as one of the significant schools of Australia.
So, to everyone in the community, thank you so much for your support in this important area. The College Board realizes the sacrifice that families make to assist Radford in this way. Rest assured that your efforts ensure that we maintain our buildings to a high standard and, just as importantly, that we can continue to imagine a school that is worthy of future generations.
Peace

Parking for Disabled Drivers
Radford has a number of parking spaces, in both the Junior School and High School/Senior School areas, which are clearly designated as being for Disabled Drivers who hold the relevant permit.
Unfortunately, one of our parents with a mobililty problem has reported that there have been several recent occasions when cars without the necessary permit displayed have been parked in these spaces, and the number plate of the car involved in the most recent instance was reported to the College.
This is not only a breach of "road rules", but also an unkindness to people who are already facing significant challenges in their daily lives. Please ensure that these spots remain available for the drivers for whom they are intended.

Reflection
The readings for this Sunday speak of two very different women. One is powerful and the other powerless, one is a queen and the other a prostitute. The reading from 1 Kings relates how the queen uses her power to take the life of an innocent man, while the reading from Luke relates how the prostitute moves past her her powerless to find a voice with which to celebrate an innocent life. The queen’s name was Jezebel, a name still used as a term of insult and derision. The prostitute is never named, but her story is retold in churches worldwide every year. The story of God is one that turns our world values and views upside down. We in the Western world are people of power. How do we align ourselves with the powerless? Where do we fit our stories into the story of the love of God for all?
A prayer: God, creator of all, bringer of peace, and champion of the despised,
you rule over all and yet you made a cross your throne,
you wear a crown of thorns and you call your subjects friends!
Help us to take up our cross and to hunger and thirst for what is good and just.
Only then will your presence be known in all the earth. Amen
(adapted from the New Zealand Prayer Book)

Black Mountain School Visit
On Tuesday, over twenty students from Black Mountain School came for the day to enjoy the games, food, sun and company of Radford students. Hosted by the Yr 10 TeamSUPPORT boys, it was a most excellent day. There is no problem to fix, no solution to find, just an opportunity for people to be in the company of each other and enjoy moving and playing and sharing each other. It was a magnificent event on all counts. Whilst the Black Mountains School has gladly received over $1000 from the RAS Charity Fundraiser for use in their schooling programme, the exchanges between student and student are much more valuable.
Refugee Simulation experience
The plight of the refugee has returned as a political football. On Saturday, 19 June, Radford will once again help out at the Refugee Soccer Day at the AIS, a partnership with Companion House. Oxfam have set up a Refugee Camp simulation experience at Stage 88, Commonwealth Park, northern foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin. It finishes this Sunday. It is well worth a visit and will take 70-90 minutes to experience properly.
Timor Leste
This Sunday, thirteen students return to Timor Leste with Tina Landos, Tanya Stevenson and Richard Browning. They are: Caitlin Bunker, Natasha Chabbra, Erika Culley, Seth De Silva, Nicola Greer, Max Grieve, Joshua Griffiths, Zoe Lucas, Lily Martin, Claire McCormack, Hayden Merrell, Georgia Nielson, Katherine Roderick. Some of the tasks that they will undertake: organizing the distribution of 10 000 dictionaries (funded through the RAS Charity Fundraiser and the Junior School); completion and installation of the '42 Footsteps Documentary; further develop the Home Language curriculum model; create Tetum early readers; classroom teaching; filming Chapter 2 of the '42 Footsteps Documentary – the search for Coli Mau. This is a lot for ten days. The relationship with the school and the office of Kirsty Sword Gusmao continues to blossom. We look forward to grows out of this expedition.
Another group of students is heading to Cambodia and Vietnam. Included in this experience will be three days of house building. From the RAS Charity Fundraiser, $5 800 is being distributed to fund this building project. We look forward to their stories on return.
Prayer Group - now Mondays and Wednesdays 8am in the Chapel
Everyone is welcome!
