Library

The Library is the central resource provider for staff and students. The Library aims to facilitate teaching and learning outcomes through ensuring intellectual and physical access to these resources.

We have a wide range of non-fiction and fiction resources in a variety of formats to support curriculum and some recreational activities. In addition to books, students and staff have access to such resources as online databases, videos, magazines, and newspapers. Audio-visual and multimedia equipment are also available for students to access information and to create their own information products.

The Library aims to enable students to:

become independent learners;
be confident using a variety of resources, including information technology;
value learning as a lifelong process;
demonstrate appropriate information skills development.

The program in the College Library:

is centred on resource-based units of work co-operatively planned with teachers and teacher librarians; and
is linked with information literacy skills, the information process and student learning outcomes.
There are four teaching/learning spaces, each of which can accommodate a class; a senior study area; and an area where students can play video material and rehearse for presentations.

Searching for resources

Resources held in the Library and the teaching departments are listed centrally on the catalogue, which can be accessed via terminals in the Library or by logging on to the College Intranet from on- or off-campus locations. The Intranet also gives access to such resources as pathfinders to guide students in particular research assignments.

Hours

The Junior School Libary is open from 8.40am until 3.45pm on school days.
The High/Senior School Library is open from 8.15am until 3.45pm during school hours and 3.45pm until 5.00pm for research and study purposes on school days.

Information Literacy and Technology

The Radford College Library aims to produce independent, lifelong learners.

Students are encouraged to use the following process when researching:

1. Defining: What do I know? What do I need to find out?
2. Locating: Where can I get the information I need?
3. Selecting: What information helps me answer my assignment?
4. Organising: Can I record and organise this material?
5. Presenting: Can I present this information with originality?
6. Evaluating: Can I work out how well I went at researching and build on this for next time?

Literature is integrated into the curriculum.
The Library's wide collection of fiction gives students the opportunity to experience our rich and varied literary heritage.

Technology

The Library is fully automated with computers placed in both teaching areas of the Library.

Oliver (catalogue) is available for use across the College Intranet
Internet and CD-ROMs can be accessed from the computers in the Library

Internet access is available for research work only.
